Anyone who’s familiar with Kanye West knows that he takes this fashion Ish seriously. Even way back in 2003 he declared, “I am gonna be the best-dressed rapper” and years on many do believe that to be true (maybe not quite as much as Kanye himself) with him freely calling himself a “genius” when discussing his creativity and business mind. Lets take a look at the main events throughout Kanye’s fashion timeline and pree the different creations right up until his latest fresh off the runway, Yeezy Season 4 release.
The Adidas YEEZY journey had our best dressed rapper branching out into menswear, womenswear and footwear. Beginning with the Yeezy 750 Boost, Yeezy Boost 350, and Yeezy 750 all being released in 2015. The soft form super popular Yeezy Boost 350 trainer has become the go to for fashion heads tryna be comfy but the versatile footwear sold out lightening fast with an initial price tag of $200 - the resale prices were nearing $1000 so getting your hands on a pair wasn't exactly easy. Maybe copping the baby size that cute stylish North West was rocking, would've been more within my price range lol.
Then came the Fashion Shows; Yeezy Season 2 premiered the clothing by having an array of young models and socialites standing mannequin like, displaying the neutral and cold tones of grey, brown, green and beige, oversized jumpers, body warmers and bomber jackets and of course the Yeezy boots and trainers. The front row for the show displayed the most epic squad with Beyonce, Jay Z, Rihanna, Anna Wintour, Alexander Wang, Diddy and Cassie watching on while models such as Amina Blue stood through Kanye’s track ‘Wolves’ playing overhead. It became the line to want to represent for young tastemakers, which is probably why it was so easy for him to fill a whole stadium for the Season 3 release.
Lets talk about that for a minute. Kanye West, a rapper and producer from Chicago, was able to fill the whole of Madison Square Garden and display the show in cinemas around the world may I add, just because people were that hyped to see Season 3 of his fashion line - Nike F’d up! He also showcased his latest album “The Life Of Pablo” at the show with an epic crowd of who’s who, wearing the line which this time featured a lot of knit wear detailing, warmer tones such as burgundy, red, and mocha and the likes of Naomi Campbell strutting her stuff on a podium just for Yeezy. The Season 3 era also started the popularity of the clear heel which Kim Kardashian West made ever popular - hop on to Instagram and it’s hard not to see some version of those clear strappy block “Lucite” heels or clear ankle boots.
With all the growing popularity of his brand and the milestones made in the merge of fashion and music, Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 4 line (or Season 2 if were counting it as the second Yeezy supply collection rather than the fourth of his shows, which include the Adidas collections), kept the fans interested, with nude tones being the focus and a whole lot of women of colour, proudly showing off their fresh faces and natural hair while wearing the sexy mesh leotards or now infamous knit boots starting from $895. I’m super in love with the Season 4 Yeezy supply knit boots which come in a small variety of low or over the knee models, in colours such as “Gold” and “Dark”.
The collection streamed on Tidal and came live from the beautiful Roosevelt Island in New York, where we watched Teyanna Taylor fresh from the buzz of “Fade” walking down the runway in all black Yeezy. The new PVC boots were a topic of discussion just like the casting call was and the show this time around still focused on a lot of oversized styles - coats with a now military twist and kimono sleeved hoodies, but had more soft textured unitards and leotards layered underneath. Kanye also introduced bralets and jersey pencil skirts with this line that seem to reflect Kim’s body hugging style - muse inso perhaps?
Yesterday, September 24th, Kanye West released the newest Adidas collaboration trainer, the Yeezy Boost 350 V2 and you can guess how quickly it sold out once again. The new shoe is made with three different colours of yarn to create the prime knit effect. Theres an add of bright "solar red" with a strip going across the trainer and the name printed in. These are fresh, I cant even front and the fact that I wasn't fast enough to get a pair is annoying, but hey, thats the power of Yeezus, he giveth and he taketh away! Don't fret for too long though more colour ways are underway with various black and white versions of the Yeezy 350 V2 seen online.
I think that when you take a step back and look at the impact Kanye West’s endeavours have had on popular culture, he does live up to all the bravado he talks. You cant shop without seeing a copy of the Yeezy shoes online or a picture of Kim, Kylie or any Kardashian sister in a magazine or blog advertising the brand with incredibly put together looks that make you want it in your wardrobe. The influence of music in fashion is undeniable and Kanye West’s presence is ever growing.
